Notes |
- John Lowe made his will on November 10, 1806 naming his son Daniel and his daughters Patsy Stanley and Charity McCoy. We probably have two "John Lows" mixed here.
Entry 2871, www.ancestry.com, by Charles Shirah cshirah@aol.com, 5/30/2003]
Note: They moved from North Carolina, then South Carolina, and finally to Georgia, where John received a land grant for serving in the Revolutionary War. John was a Pvt. in Artillery under Elijah Clark during the war. Later information gives his rank as a Lieutenant.
John Lowe was a Pvt. and used the source of, "The Revolutionary services of John Lowe are on file in the office of Secretary of State of the State of Georgia. Examined, certified copy of records on file in Secretary of State's office, showing that John Lowe received 287 1/2 acres of land as Bounty for Revolutionary services. Ruth M. Griswold Pealor, Genealogist, SSDAR." See National #56068. This paper was verified for Mrs. Mary Ida Yarborough by National #61684.
Under application, "Ancestor's Services", it says, "State of Georgia, Wilkes County.- This is to certify that John Lowe hath steadfastly done his duty from the time of passing an Act at Augusta, to wit, on the 20th of August 1781 until the total expulsion of the British from this state: and the said John Lowe can not to my knowledge or belief be convicted of plundering or distressing the country: and is therefor under the said Act, entitled to a Bounty of two hundred and fifty acres of good land free from taxes for ten years. Given under my hand at Savannah this day of February 1784. Elijah Clark, Colonel, By his order, H. Freeman".
"Georgia. These are to certify, that John Lowe is entitled to two hundred and fifty acres of land as a Bounty, agreeable to an Act, and Resolve of the General Assembly, passed at Augusta the 20th of August 1781 as per certificate of Elijah Clark. Given under my hand at Savannah the 26th day of March in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty Four.
J. Houston"
The above is a copy of certified papers from Phillip Cook, Secretary of State of Georgia, March 11, 1913.
John Lowe received 287 1/2 acres in Washington County, GA, June 9, 1784. His service had been attested by a certificate by Col. Elijah Clarke on February 2, 1784. John's land was bounded on the west by Col Clarke's land. (Survey 21, warrant 1558, page 7). Records indicate that John sold his land to John and Frances Lamar in the next few years becaue there is a land sale from the Lamars to John Thomas in 1788, with a note "land granted to John Lowe".
John's son Thomas sold his father's 77 1/2 acres in Hancock County on August 8, 1796 for eighty Pounds. The transaction was not recorded unti Nov 1798. The deed was signed by Thomas and his wife Parthenia Wineford Stanley Lowe. We have only two other records of John Lowe. He made his will on November 10, 1806, naming his son Daniel and his daughters Patsy Stanley and Charity McCoy. Daniel and sons-in-law Sherwood Stanley and Abner McCoy were to be executors. In 1820 John Lowe died in Hancock County. He was 83 or 84 years old.
Many of the family remain in the South, including Texas. This family has many members in politics in Georgia, as well as prominent judges, Attorneys, Doctors, etc. It appears the Lowes were well loved by the rest of the family as many used the middle name Lowe and frequently the first name of Nancy.
Notes from Jean Schneider, August 22, 1998, through Pamela Butler
I found that some signers of the "Regulator Advertisement" were Isaac Low and John Low. John in 1768 was appointed to meet with the sheriff of Orange regarding taxes and fees. He signed Regulatory minutes at meeting at Sollings and also signed letter to (Governor) Tyron protesting taxes. Samuel Low also in 1768 signed the letter to Tyron, and in 1771 was at Regulator meeting with Rowan County officials.
Pamela Butler mentions: 1790 Stokes County, NC Census: John Low #11400.(?)
His will was filed in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, NC on May 11, 1759, and probated in 1759. Will book Number 8, page 173 (1753-68). Hannah is listed in the 1790 census in that county.
