Notes |
- Revolutionary War Records of Duplin & Sampson County, NC, by Virginia and Oscar Bizzell: Stephen King, Private, NC Militia served in a company of militia commanded by Captain Michael King and Col. James Kenan, and participated in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge. Stephen owned over 2500 acres in Sampson and Cumberland Counties. As a lawyer, he handled affairs of Major jesse Oates after Jesse killed David Cogdill in a dual and fled to Kentucky. Jesse Oates was Stephen King's brother-in-law. Stephen's father, Henry, left the plantation home to him. Stephen, an attorney, died without a will and a committee of Alex Fleming, Joseph Darden & James Cobb was appointed by the Court to distribute his property to his heirs. At the time of his death, over $15,000 was owed to him. Some of the Sampson County Court of Pleas records about the settlement of Stephen King's estate are recorded in "Alvin King, His Ancestors and Descendants, 1630-1996" by Alleen King Hill and Juanity King Lowrance, pages 26-34.
