- James J. Cotton was a prosperous farmer living in the Emory Chapel area and near the present day Mitchell Springs. By 1860 the couple had accumulated considerable property which included 17 slaves. The Cottons were members of the Primitive Baptist Church, probably at Sharon. They were buried in the family cemetery on lands now owned by a paper company.
