Notes |
- John Looney was probably among the first settlers on tribal lands of the Cherkoee Indians north of the Tennessee River in sourthern Tennessee and northeastern Alabama. Gove. Joseph McMinn of Tennessee told the Cherokee Chiefs in Nov. 1818 what it was no longer possible to protect them from encroachment by the surrounding white people.
08/04/1820 Commissioned a Justice of the Peace of Jackson Co., AL
John purchased land Jan 10, 1829, March 22, 1831, and Oct 29 1831 in what became Monroe County, MO.
1830 census Ralls Co., MO
John 50-60 with wife aged 40-50, 2 boys 10-15, one female 20-30, 2 females 15-20, and one female 10-15.
About 1832 John left this area and moved into southwestern Missouri. Settlement was just beginning in this area with the first settlers of what was to be the City of Springfield arriving about 1829. John purchased the 160 acrea paying $200 for the patent on his land under the Pre-Emption act of 1820, case no. 532 on Oct 26, 1838. Witnessed by son Jesse Looney and son-in-law, John Lair. John's land was located between Willard and Cave Springs.
Letter March 20, 1834 from daughter Margaret to her husband John Lair. This date is of particular interest as it would indicate that Margaret had stayed behind with relatives while the Looney family moved to Green County, MO. Left at home in 1833 would have been Absolom, William, and perhaps three daughters - Martha, Nancy, and Lavinia.
07/31/1838 bought land at auction in Greene Co., near Walnut Grove, MO
