- John's will is recorded in the Estate Book 1, Knox County, TN, page 149.
On September 27, 1767 John Looney purchased of his older brother Adam Looney the 271 acres known as the Meadow Run or Bryan's Creek tract which Adam had bought from Colonel James Patton in 1752. On March 4, 1768 John Looney had 250 acres surveyed on Looney's Mill Creek along his own patent line; also 196 acres adjoining John Mill's land. (Rockingham County Surveys 1, page 137) The 250 acres were purchased from his nephew Peter Looney, but the deed was not made or recorded until January 12, 1796. (Botetourt Deeds book 5, page 347)
John Looney was wounded in the siege of Savannah, GA in 1779. He was later granted a total disability pension of $8.00 per month for this service by special Act of Congress in 1837.
On February 12, 1805, John Looney purchased 183 acres, the Flaggy Spring tract, on waters of Craig Creek, from John Taylor and wife Mary. (Botetourt Deeds book 8, page 537) Then on June 8 and 9 1807 by a series of 6 deeds, John Looney (joined by his wife Esther in one instance) gave land for love and affection or nominal fees to his children Eleanor, Jane, John, Joseph, David, and Esther. (Botetourt County, VA Deeds book 9, pages 306-313)

Botetourt County, VA: John appears over 45 with female over 45 living with Robert Looney 16-26, female 16-26, and no children; the name of head of household being listed Jno & Robert Looney.
March 23, 1816 John Looney and Esther, his wife, deeded 315 acres to Robert Looney for 800 pounds. (Botetourt County, VA, Deeds book 12, page 98)
